Here is a small cover with a nice strike of a Waterbury CT Aug 6 CDS bearing a copy of Scott #24, position 62R5. I was most struck by the enclosure, however. I guess this is how people ghosted each other before the advent of social media:
"Sir - You are the only person I believe with whom I get excited in disputes - and I am resolved henceforth to avoid all conversation with you on political subjects - and request that you will not hereafter commence such topics with me.
"Your manner to me is insulting, though probably you do not so intend it - and my best if not only defense will be to abstain entirely from all disputes with you.
"You can not convince me to your way of thinking and I shall not attempt to convert you.
"W. Patton Aug 6th"
The addressee, Amos S. Blake, was a businessman in Waterbury and apparently was granted a patent for a type of piano lock.
