I believe this to be an example of an unlisted double impression of RS22a, the Demas Barnes two cent private die proprietary stamp.

What do you think?

I had to break the scans in two, to overcome the image limit size.

p.s. not sure if I ever posted this; if I did, sorry for the repeat.

This would require some careful examination before determining exactly what is going on here. I suspect that a double transfer or possibly a kiss print is more likely then a double impression. Very interesting item.

The doubling appears to be uniformly to the southwest of the original impression and is throughout the entire design, so that implies doubled impression to me (I'm done with trying to split hairs on double vs. kiss impression) vs. double transfer.

EDIT: See comments below. I obviously wasn't looking closely enough.

I disagree, the doubling in the middle is oriented somewhat differently from the doubling at the bottom. Nor is it "complete". Look carefully at "proprietary articles of" at the top; some letters are clearly doubled and some appear not to be. Love to see this in person.

You're correct, the doubling at the bottom is directly to the west; I missed that. In fact looking closer, just at the top of the stamp, the doubling of U.S. INTERNAL is due west and Proprietary just below it is due south. No doubled impression could cause that. It's a DT... an extensive one.
