The high dollar denominated series of 1917 revenue stamps were issued in vertical panes of four.

One of the more uncommon varieties is the imperforate pair of the $1,000 value (R250a).

I picked this pair up a long time ago:

And I just found the "bottom" pair that was, at one time, attached to the bottom of my "top" pair:

Not sure where Siegel got "five pairs recorded," as there should be an even number of pairs that exist, right?

First - very nice pair of stamps!!!! Those should be on your "proud to own these" page(s).

A pair will always be an even number (1 pair = 2 stamps), but the number of pairs can be anything.

If there were six pairs and I cut one pair into two singles, now there are five pairs?

A pair with serial numbers 66739/ 66740 was also sold by Siegel as part of the Curtis sale.

We are dealing with survival rates here. These were meant to be used, and who knows how many imperfs were simply cut up and applied to a document which is now lost.

To add to the whole even vs. odd discussion, not only could the number of multiples be an odd number, but the number of stamps could be as well, as theoretically one could have a vertical strip of 3 (original strip of 4 with 1 removed).
