It is a Scott #501 (perf 11) with something going on with the bottom perfs.

Except a 502 never had that plate number, only 501 had that plate number.

The perf 10 on one side pins were located between the second and third row on the sheet. Some 6 cent sheets were inverted. In any case, the pins had a distinct signature and gauged somewhere between 10-81 and 10-82 on average. A full view of the row can be found on the Philatelic Foundation web site.

Don't walk away. Run!
Clearly reperfed from a perf 11 at bottom to simulate something that it isn't.

In more depth, the progression of the residual perf holes across the main perf tips at the bottom center and yet not showing residual holes at the left and right ends where they align with the new perf holes, demonstrates that there used to be a row of perforations one gauge higher than now, Perf 11. A little photo manipulation would show this clearly.

Agree with 501 assessment. Top ans sides appear original but bottom perfs are contrived. As John said just above...RUN!

Here's a similar stamp, offered as a genuine #545 but is actually a fake #544 created from adding fake gauge-11 perfs (top and bottom) to a #542. Despite careful working of the old perf holes, you can see teeth that show where the original hole was contacted (especially at top).

The red flag on such fakes is that the teeth end in an arc because the tooth hitting the original hole will be shortest, and their lengths will get longer as they move out until the longest tooth falls between the old perf holes. Fortunately for us, fakers want to keep the teeth as long as possible to "convince" us that the stamp is too tall to be fake. Unfortunately, I have seen such fake #544's certified as genuine by two of the major services. For example:

502e is not known in unused condition. Seven recorded in Siegel census.

Found this interesting sale by Spink of a MNH 502e with a cert. Wonder what happened for it to become null and void.
