Out of all of my 6c Garfield stamps - this is the most unusual. I can guess that everyone will say it is a changeling... but what could make it so? I've seen black post marks on all my other stamps without anything close to this. It truly stands out as brown and apart from the rest.

Nope -- it is a sulfuretted orange, quite common.

Have you tried the peroxide? Did it work?

This is the same stamp after following the peroxide instructions.

It didn't change anything significantly.

"Simply place your affected stamp in a glass tray or dish then cover it with peroxide. Allow the stamp to soak in the peroxide for approximately 60 seconds, but while it is immersed in the peroxide, swish the stamp around gently to aid exposing all of it to the fluid. While in the peroxide observe the stamp often to see if the brown color is being removed and as soon as it is, or after about 60 seconds, remove it and rinse it under lukewarm gently-running water from a sink tap. The goal is to remove any trace of the peroxide from the stamp."

Here is a test example I did with the damaged stamp several years ago. Cut in half and soaked in peroxide probably 10 minutes or more then well-rinsed. A bit long and a somewhat exaggerated effect, but it shows the amount of change that can happen from the original orange.

Believed adding more time would damage the stamp - I'll do a 10 minute dip.

I was about to post the same query, when I checked the forum, and found this old thread.

Here's my "sulfuretted orange".
