Sorry about the pics, I can appreciate that to get real info on any stamp you would need a clear, close up picture. There are just so many (to me) and I don't know where to start.

If any stand out to you or maybe one is rendered invisible by the flash please let me know and I can post a clearer picture of any of them.
I guess I just want to know if this was all worth 15$ or not, maybe they are fake, I am not an expert.

Thank you for looking and for any info you may have!

Hello. This isn't really a "collection", more a small accumulation of common, modern stamps. $15 would be very opimistic, I'm afraid.

Forgive my ignorance, I am new to the stamp world.

-What eras of stamps are considered "modern"?
-How many stamps would one need to call them a "collection" vs as you say a "small accumulation"?

Hello. Roughly up to 1900 is "early", 1900-40 is "middle" and later is "modern", but these terms are rather elastic. "Collection" tends to assume some sort of organised process of selection and display, rather than stamps, often with extensive duplication, simply being housed in a stock-book or elsewhere.

Here's a stock book of US I sold last week for $30. I estimate it had 6000-8000 stamps. You can compare your collection to this one and estimate the value.

Hello Medes. Welcome to the world of stamps. Its a good hobby that will last the rest of your life. I wouldn't get hung up on terminology as the terms have different definitions depending on who you ask. In my opinion, the pictures you posted IS the start of a collection. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

To me modern U.S. stamps started in the late 1930s, but like I said, its not really important.

The stamps you have shown is a good start. $15 isn't bad, but you might be able to get a little more for your money by browsing ebay or other stamp related sites. It's also a good place to get you a cheap Scott Catalog. Ones that are a few years old go for almost nothing. This will allow you to organize your collection. Good Luck

'Worth' is a very subjective term. What was your intent on purchasing them?

Did the stamps come loose in an envelope or did you also get the pages they are on (or is it a stock book). And is that $15 USD or $15 Canadian? ($11.26 USD)

I wouldn't worry about fakes among these stamps - with one exception. Someone has damaged the Family Planning stamp by cutting the perfs off on all four sides. Novice collectors might mistakenly think this is an imperf error which it is not.

To the novice eye, it is perfectly normal to equate old with valuable. As the previous responders have pointed out, these stamps have minimal value. Some of these stamps were produced in numbers exceeding 100 million. Not very rare even though they are old. Keep at it. Collecting is a wonderful window into history. Most stamps have some kind of back story. Many are quite interesting.
