I've been getting a lot of good information from this board after finding it a year or so ago, but have never posted until now. I have always been able to find similar questoins to mine that were already addressed, until now, so here goes... I've been sorting through a boatload of 2c Washingtons and am now cataloging all the offset types. I've gone through hundreds of stamps and found only one that looks like the attached. The peculiar thing about this is the numeral 2 at lower left. It has a curly cue tail that looks like nothing I can find reference to. Any ideas what this is?

Thanks!

It appears to be a bit of ink which was perfectly placed to give you curly-q effect you mentioned. This would not be an error but a printing freak, as it would not be something which would recur with regularity.

I agree that it is a freak but I think it would look good in an album with note about it.

Makes sense. You can't see it too well in the photo but this stamp is more heavily inked in general than most other 2c offsets that I've seen. This makes it plausible that the odd 2 is due to excess ink. Other than this, it looks like a type VII to me. The cancel hides the dots under the nose, but the solid line of the left 2 and dots in the top of the head tell me it's a VII...
