i have a question:

are grills always, or perhaps near always, positioned correctly horizontal/vertical on the stamp?

example: I grill is 7x9.5, does this mean always 7 horizontal and 9,5 vertical? or can it be the other way around?

thank you

No, I never heard of that, so your horizontal I grill is an H grill with some point missing which is normal for H grills of some states. But an image would help.

But this is an interesting topic about the grill production, I also ask myself for example why no machine or even parts of it have survived at all as well as much knowledge about them (and the background of some grills like the Z grill). This is why I can't really say why it was technically not possible that the vertical and horizontal direction was inverted, maybe somebody else has more to say. If I look at the machine shown in the PDF it's clear that it can not be switched in the direction, but who knows if other technology was also used?

Dutch, Are you asking if any of the grills were applied at 90 degrees rotation to the intended orientation? Then, no.
