Hi, I can't seem to figure this out. This Washington 3 cent coil has a perf 9.5. The only perf less than 10 that I can find is a perf 8.5. Anyone have any ideas on what this is?

I think it is perf 10; note how the #1. below is properly aligned while a few perfs away #2 is not aligned the same way.

I don't see a way for this stamp to be a legitimate perf 9.5, so fake perfs to make a more valuable coil? It would explain one of the perfs (#2 from Don's image) being a bit off but the next on again.

I am also bumping to see if anyone else wants to weigh in. The added perf 10 image is certainly off.

Check the accuracy of your perf gauge. If your scan is accurate, the width of the stamp image is the same as the distance between the vertical lines on your gauge. But these can't be the same.

The perf measurements in Scott are rounded off. The actual value is indeed somewhere between 9.5 and 10, although closer to 10 if I recall. Trying to use this type of gauge won't get the results sought. Someone with the literature handy can give the exact value. The quickest solution is to use other stamps of known gauge.

US stamp measurements are converted, but they aren't off by that much. I didn't even consider that the problem was the accuracy of the gauge!
