The underlying stamp itself is Japan Scott 105, and catalogs as an ordinary used one for the minimum value of $0.25. (Scott 2015)

I would not call the "CB1" an overprint, but rather a cancellation of some kind (perhaps a revenue or consular cancel?). I'm not familiar with it, but perhaps someone else here is.

An interesting example!

Ok, I lucked out and got an answer back really quickly from a friend who knows.

This is called a "countermarked" stamp, and performs the function of a perfin -- it was marked by a company to make sure they were used for company mail.

The "CB1" actually stands for "CBI", which represents the "Chartered Bank of India, Australia, and China". This was from their Yokohama branch.

I'm not sure of this, but I believe it would carry a bit of a premium used in this fashion.

You deserve the credit here Phil,
you are the conduit between your knowledgeable colleague, and us.
That would have been a difficult nut to crack.
