Just from an Australian perspective, Dope, as I knew it as a kid into aircraft modelling....

A friend wants to send the scan, and question, to the State Revenue News. Is that OK?

The only thing that makes sense to me is that "DOPE" may stand for "Department Of P----- E-----". |

Thanks, everyone for your replies and humor! Absolutely, RevCollector, send to anyone who may be able to shed some light. The stamp itself is in poor shape but the mystery is still there. |

How about Grid, Department of Physical Education and then an old style PHone number? But what that has to do with a tax is still a mystery. |

I suspect that the Ph. 123 is a 1930's phone number. I also believe that Grid dope is the name of a retail establishment. The stamp itself could be used on cigarettes, tobacco products, malt, and liquor. The 2¢ denominations was widely used on cigarettes. |

Grid Dope seems to have been a popular phrase for football information in those days, so a store with that name is a real possibility. |

Sorry Tom, I'd normally accept the challenge but I'm working on finishing my book.
Thanks though!
