This is a FDC and addressed as shown.
The envelope is sealed and the back has no markings.
In your opinion did it pass through the mails?
OR was it more like:
It got its markings and then and then was inserted in another addressed envelope that got it to its destination?

At this time period there's no reason for it to have markings on the back. It's not registered or have any other special service. I don't see why it would not have passed through the mail. If it was to be inserted into an envelope for mailing, why bother with an address?

Schrödinger's FDC.

It appears to be cancelled by favour for philatelic purposes - need not have gone anywhere after that, except into the collection!

If you are corresponding with a collector, why would you NOT send a letter via FDC?

I've done it, myself, more than once.

Cheers,

It is hard to say for sure whether or not it went through the mail, but my first impression is that it did not as it is sealed and unfilled, has no additional markings that international mail sometimes picked up and seems to be in undamaged condition. Still, the lack of back stamp or other transit markings is not necessarily an indication it did not as there were no requirements for plain surface mail to get such markings at this time. The address doesn't mean much in terms of a FDC of this era as it was not uncommon for collector's to like having their name and address on them. Is it important to you for a FDC of this era to have gone through the mail? I do not know what the postage rate was for an envelope to the US was for ordinary seamail. I do know that airmail in 1946 was 10 d, so perhaps 4 1/2 d was more than enough and likely an overpayment for eventual delivery by boat. On the other hand, if this was made by a dealer they might have wanted to get their stock of FDCs quicker than their competition, or at least no less quickly so packing up a handful of these and sending them inside an airmail envelope would make sense.
