As you may have seen from other posts of mine I've been struggling with determining whether the stamp I purchased as an 1857 Newfoundland 3d (Scott #3) is #3 or perhaps #11A. I'm sure it is just my inexperience showing but I can't see the tell tales I've read about when looking at stamps that I know to be printed on mesh paper. It occurred to me that retroreveal might be helpful so I thought I'd ask the community.

Thanks,
Terry

Give it a try. It's free and non destructive. You never know what you will discover unless you give these things a trial run.

GJP: I processed the scan of the back of my #3 and another #3 currently being sold on ebay and unfortunately found that to be less than helpful.

I also processed scans of the backs of the 1-cent and 2-cent stamps from the NFLD Publicity Issue and presence of the mesh was very clear.

That raises the question in my mind whether my #3 and the one on ebay are both #11A? Or, perhaps, might the mesh of the #3 paper and the Publicity Issue be different and so show up differently in RR?

If anyone reading this thread is inclined to do so it might be very helpful to see scans of the backs of your #3s.

Thanks,
Terry
