I found one stamp in a lot I purchased with SG 339a. SG reports 339a as "gold (centre) omitted". I do not see any significant difference with the other stamp although 339a may be a tad (scientific term) brighter. There was a scrap stating Double Print £10. There is no mention of a double print in SG. Scott lists as 312 and makes no mention of any varieties.
I need some help understanding this. I would assume if the gold was missing there would be no second color.
revised to correct SG number in subject despite 339a in listing.
The stamp in question is the halfpenny value from the 1965 definitive. That set is notorious for the amount of errors that exist - from omitted and misplaced colours, to double printings and even imperforate stamps (I suspect that at least some of the varieties were deliberate - it's hard to imagine major varieties escaping quality control at a major printing firm such as Harrison & Sons).
I don't have this variety in my collection (I've lost interest in the 1960s issues) but I do have the normal stamp. Probably the gold omitted refers to some of the gold printing on the spiral designs.
I don't understand what you mean regarding the double print. Is this referring to the same stamp, or another one from the same set? The halfpenny is known with "MALTA" slightly doubled.
Can you post an image of the stamp please, and a normal one for comparison if possible?
(Edited-I originally thought that the post referred to another stamp from the same set)
I guess I was not paying attention when I thought the original owner had the right SG catalog number. I did consult my SG prior to posting. It has been a busy week as I try to integrate life in my work. (ha)
