I've seen Sisson & Chapman checks sell for decent money before -- they are attractive pieces. But this one just went for $156 on ebay with 60 bids, which seems way out of line. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1852-1-000...43663.l44720

It was issued in 1852, so no rare revenues attached. As far as I can see, there are no famous autographs. Can anyone spot something that makes this one particularly special?

Indeed a very attractive document. To add some analysis, yes, there were 60 bids, but there were only 10 different bidders and only 2 bidders above $61 and only 3 bidders above $37. So without one of the two top bidders it might have gone for $62.

GregAlex, What do you consider a reasonable price for a check like this? Can you point to other sales?

There are several other BIN ebay lots currently listed from $50 down to $15 that appear to be the same check. Condition is a factor, but usually that makes a bigger difference with currency.

The most likely probability is that two people saw it and liked it and were not aware of the other examples available.

That's always a possible argument, but at least three bidders drove it past the reasonable-price threshhold. To me that indicates there's something more to it.

I agree, it's a looker. But I frequently buy attractive, engraved checks from this era for $20 or less.

Is that pay to the order of H.P. Kidder? He was one of the founders of Kidder,Peabody. Possibly a reason.

A document with his signature. Is that his signature on the back of this check, and if so do they look similar?

It's definitely N.B. Kidder on the check. But it's possible the bidders could have confused the Kidders. Seems unlikely that multiple bidders would all get it wrong, tho.
