A friend, mr John Hart, sent me this tag a while ago when we were swapping for perfins So it has,some lovely stamps and, I think, unique usage, but where do they fit? Back of book as parcel post?, postal history? Or do people usually soak the stamps off?   |

Do NOT soak the stamps off. This is a very desirable postal history item. These registered tags were often used to on large, heavy bags of cash that were sent by banks. Your tags is a nice example and fairly valuable.

Thanks Rod and Don, where can I find a value on the tag Don?
I do like the $5.00 stamp and have a couple in my collection already, same with the prexies so the tag is safe,
I'll have a good google session and see if I can find some background! |

Very late usage for the $5 fourth bureau stamp, worder why they didn't use the $5 Prexie. I'm not saying at the moment it's of philatelic nature but hard to imagine having a stamp in their drawer 15 years after issue date. |

The values for these look to be hit or miss. I see some Prexies with multiple $1 pieces selling for less than $10. The $5 fourth bureau should lift the value plus the condition appears good. |

Concur with Don, DO NOT soak the stamps off the tag.
Just curious if there is a data base for the banking institution and registration numbers? It would be rather cool to research a little and possibly find more information on this particular tag. |

Tags are the kind of postal history that collectors either love or hate. I have never understood why, since there is no such thing as a "philatelic" tag. |

Agreed Rev. just seems odd that with the $5 Prexie being released a year and a half prior to the OP's tag date that the 4th bureau $5 stamp was still available. The 50c 4th bureau was issued later with the rotary press issues so that one might be used in period. |

Back in the late 1950's, I bought some odd value Prexies at a tiny postal annex in Washington, D.C. So, many years ago the old stamps could hang around for a long time in the right location. |

Higher face value stamps move slower in post office stocks. It is common to find high value 4th Bureau issues used with low value Prexies in this transitional era between the two definitive series. The same is true in the early to mid 1950s when high value Prexies were still left in PO stocks and are used with low value Liberties. Nothing unusual at all. |

This will slip into my cover/postal stationary albums with my 1940's Crosby covers, and Postal stationery

I thought the 5 dollar usage was very late myself and quite unique in its usage.
