I just tried the Swedish Tiger site & ended up with 187 myself. But Macarelli shows the following differences in a footnote for 209 as compared to earlier 10-cent Jeffersons: (1) only 4 vertical lines between the oval & the edge of the shield ... previous issues had 5 lines (2) background vertical lines are strengthened (3) 4 horizontal lines including frame line on the 2 sides of the curved upper center tip of the shield rather than 3 (4) left side of the curved band containing U.S POSTAGE almost touches outer edge of shield, whereas other issues have more space and a background line between the curved band & the outer shield edge It was after reading all of this and applying it to a question on the forum that the expert of which I spoke chimed in & pointed out that one need not count lines ... just look at the the colors of the border. Added: Noticed that Micarelli doesn't mention which side of the oval to count lines ... Scott says the left side
John, if you want to try another explanation, I would be glad to read it. Not only Scott 50, but what happened to all those Scott numbers between 48 and 54?
Don ... Thanks for the pictures ... definitely worth more than words. I must remember in the future to look at stampsmarter as my first id source. John
The re-engraved stamp, Sc 209 has four vertical shading lines between the left side of the oval and the \edge of the shield. There are 5 lines in the same position on all other 10c large Banknotes.

I took a longer, more-general stab at answering this in a new thread.
