Does anyone know how to tell whether a manila paper cut square is a "W" from a wrapper or a "U" from an envelope? I assume it is paper type that might differ per issue, but neither the Scott catalog nor the books put out by the UPSS seem to help unless I missed something (which is very likely). Thanks for the help!
Wrappers printed on laid paper tend to be either horizontally or vertically laid. Manila paper diagonally laid is from an envelope. Unfortunately, some early manila envelopes are on horizontally or vertically laid paper. Items on wove paper, other than size of the cut square, have no identifying characteristics to determine if it is a wrapper or an envelope. Avoid the problem, collect entires ;)
