Ray, Not an expert. Shown is a London EC (East Central) "Duplex" hand canceller number 98, referred to as a "London 3-5-5-3 Duplex 98" The X identifies the hammer in use. As does the F2 on the receiving hammer in Liverpool. Possibly Mr. I.C. Jackson (scribble unknown, possibly west or nth west Liverpool) London EC Duplex 98, going to Mexico................ 1872 |

Quote: can you explain "hammer" Hammer: Name of the Hand Held Canceller used by Postal Staff. (If you visited a major Post Office up until the 1960's, one could hear the cacophony of "hammers" as staff hit the envelopes with the hand canceller, on benches covered with cow hide) "Duplex" means 2, The Hand held canceller had 2 parts, the CDS (Circular Date Stamp) and the stamp canceller part...the "killer" Here is an US Duplex, see the CDS and the barred "killer" adjacent The 3-5-5-3 indicates the bars on the "killer" 3 bars top. 5 little ones left, 5 little one right, and 3 at bottom. These come in varied formats, clues to the origin. |

Quote: When the number is in a circle or diamond, it is a London office postmark. Town postmarks don't have the circle or diamond.
Quote: The last line of the address is Nr (as in near) Liverpool.
Thank you both. |

Lovely Page Ray. Suggestions: Number cancellation 98- Blackburn etc.... irrelevant information on this cover, not required. May confuse new collectors, the 98 in circle is a London Pmk. "Cancel on the back" may be better described as "Receiving Postmark" or similar.
However, you are on your way, pages like this are fabulous. What software are you employing?
PS: You may wish to add the Penny Red Letters DP / PD and the Plate number... (I cannot read it from your scan, looks like "?0" )
