These two stamps are both Scott # 71, the 6p gray black. Both are on paper with the single-lined figure watermark. There are many differences between the two stamps. The right stamp has incomplete edges on the vignette, the outer frame line is of widely varying thickness, and the line at the end of the queen's mouth extends both above and below the lips. Is this just a printing variation, a plate variety or a forgery?
Note in the fakes given there, the hair bun/chignon are different. Also see: https://www.stampsofvictoria.com/beaded.php - scroll down Note that the head medallion was changed to a smaller size and also wore badly as time went on. So I think that's what's up with the stamp on the right.
Thank you to both of you for some very helpful and detailed information in those links. It would seem that both stamps are genuine, as the forgeries would not be on the proper watermarked paper, and that the differences can be accounted for by the way the adaptations were made to the plate. The link provided by hy-brasil was particularly useful as it showed how much variation can be found on the plate in the later printings. Thanks again!!! ~Glenn
This design was an adaptation of the 6d 'Beaded Oval' design. There are two dies and you have one of each here. The first stamp shown by you is die II, with the central vignette fully occupying the oval space, the stamp on the right is die I where there is a larger white band around the vignette containing the Queen's head.
I have been studying my Gibbons, If the 6d both have the single line "6" wmk, then (apparently) the corrollory suggests that the Paper is both De La Rue. Gibbons does not offer advice on a change of dies for this issue (In my catalogue)
Aha..second reading I see Saunders and DLR exist in the two dies (a&b) "1862 central vignette cut from Type 9 with a new frame"
SG #107 (18th June 1863) Perf 12 or Perf 13 (jet black or grey black)
The DLR paper is more brittle and whiter than the TH Saunders.
I'd like to clarify what to me looks uncertain at the moment.
