I saw this too. Back in the 70's one saw a lot of them, but they don't show up much these days. |

There are articles about these in the October 1971 and February 1972 issues of The American Revenuer. http://tar.revenuer.org/TAR1971.10.pdfhttp://tar.revenuer.org/TAR1972.02.pdfI have a single stamp, as well as one of the bisects on document that I purchased from Richard Friedberg some years ago. I haven't seen any recently. Both were knowingly purchased as fakes. Interesting pieces of history if nothing else. |

Dan- Thanks for digging out the articles in The American Revenuer. So it was 1938, not the 1920's as I originally wrote in this thread. They were initially marketed by Eugene Klein, a prominent Philadelphia stamp dealer at that time. And the whole thing was exposed by another prominent stamp dealer, Phillip Ward. Mike Morrissey's article is a gem. |

That was an interesting read. Impressive sleuthing by Ward.
It sounds like there were no consequences for the perpetrator here. Or at least none that were mentioned. |

There were not. Both Klein and Ward were giants in their day. Remember, it was Klein who brokered the full sheet of C3a. Whatever they claimed was likely to be accepted. So if Klein said he got them from a third party no one would question it. |

Just speculation, but someone here may have contacted the seller and offered to buy it outright. All things considered, the listing price of $9.95 isn't much to pay for this piece, given the history. Yes, it's fake, but it's a fake with a story. |

Thought it might be interesting to some of you to show a different document with one of these bogus hand stamps, albeit a less than perfect document. The image resurrected from a buried pile of philatelic stuff. |
