I have some on-paper used Australian stamps which I would like to successfully remove. Problem is, they seem to either fall apart, rip/tear or otherwise degrade when making the soaking attempt. I've had a few successes, but am not sure what the difference is, as to why I can succeed with one but the exact same stamp falls apart or thins severely elsewhere.

Here's some examples of the stamps I'm speaking of, specifically:

I'm seeing lots of interesting stamps with good visual appeal, but am wondering if I need to just trim the paper and leave them as they are.

Anyone here have success removing them from paper, or am I best to leave them in their received state and just mount them accordingly? Seems many Australian stamps tend towards this degrading when removing, from the selection I've encountered thus far.

Yes, we do not make it easy for collectors.

Opinion:
only solution is using "Bestine" (Bunnings Un-do) $14 a bottle.
Invest in a set of PRINZ long pointy nose tweezers .

Remove the lip attachment from the bottle.
Turn the stamp over, and drip some solution on the back of the stamp,
slip a blade of the tweezer between paper and stamp, slip off the shard of paper, place the stamp face up on neutral talcum powder.

With practice takes a few seconds.

If that is beyond you, just cut around the simulated perfs, leaving about 3mm border.

Good Luck.

Hmm...I know I can do what you describe, but I don't feel like the cost is worth it, so the best option may be just the trimming you suggest.

I do appreciate the response!

Thanks.
There is no discredit trimming, if the borders remain consistant, your album page can look OK.

The more modern Australian stamps, are even more problematic,
they have 8 die cut "slits" to prevent re use.
Bestine is the only solution for removal.

Well, the way I see it is even if I don't pull it form paper, it's not like I degraded it's condition any more than it already was when I received it. And in the future I or someone else may remove them.

I'm just so disappointed of seeing some interesting pieces decimated when I try to work on them.

We have all been there,
take heart in 1. It's a learning experience, lesson learned. 2. There are Squillions of these modern die cut stamps, there will always be more available for mere pennies.

You will recognise these type of die cut perfs, (self stick adhesive) and will save you damaging other countries that Australia has printed for...eg Ireland.
