Roald Dahl (1916–1990) was a British novelist, short story writer, poet, screenwriter, and fighter pilot in WW2. His books have sold more than 250 million copies worldwide. Viviane Dommann of Zürich illustrated the two new Swiss panes of stamps full of fairy tale characters in delightful detail. The witch in her little house is enjoying the stories read by a princess at her doorstep.

What a curious collection of motifs!

We've got a young girl (?princess?) walking hand-in-hand with an as-yet-unkissed crown-bearing frog/toad.

We've got a dog on the back of a donkey, suggesting the English idiom "a dog & pony show".

We've got, to an American eye, a pilgrim graciously introducing himself to a turkey ... and we've got this holiday where the pilgrims eat the turkeys.

We've got a gingerbread cookie dancing on a pretzel, which could be a propaganda theme from The Great War.

That is one busy little stamp, Kris!

Hi Ikey, I think it may be Little Red Riding Hood walking with the Frog who rescued the Golden Ball and Hensel and Gretel who are sitting next to the Donkey and munching a gingerbread. The Donkey is practicing with the dog for their performance in Bremen, as soon as the cat and the rooster get organized. On the other hand, the rooster is being thanked for a good ride by the little man in pantaloons. Down at the bottom of the pane it may be Snow White talking to a well-dressed Fox. Perhaps he is the one who was so smug but lost to the stork. And the Troll is checking his treasure chest. The Bear family at the right is watching the Brave Tailor at work.


There are no Witches in this post - shall I leave it or take it out again? K.
