With Washington Press going out of business I started looking for a new source for supplies and I tried Mystic Stamps.

Here is the problem I'm having. With Washington Press the size of the mount was for the size of the stamps to be held. I assumed that Mystic was the same way. I received my two ordered from them and on one of them is MM509 - 36x55 millimeters but the fine print on the package (which was not on Mystic web site when I ordered) was Fits: 31x50mm).

I measured the stamps twice to make sure that I was ordering the mount they will fit into.

Another problem with Mystic is I will have to contact them by phone on their schedule. Although there is a way (supposedly) on their web site to contact but it will not show if the message was sent.

Is there a reliable company that sell mounts with the stamp size listed???

Thanks,

Amos Advantage (Scott Publications) might be worth trying.

Subway Stamp Shop is generally good.

I've never understood the appeal of Mystic which charges very high prices for nearly everything. Maybe it's their flood of advertising that gets customers, but I buy very little from them.

You might just google "stamp mounts" and see all the companies that come up. Then contact them. Google is your friend.

Why not buy the largest strips available at a particular price point and cut them yourself? For instance, if I buy 100 Hawid-type 210mm x 33mm strips, the price is the same as buying 100 21mm-height strips, giving a wider range of stamps with which the strip can be used.

I would second Geoff, buy the strips and cut them yourself, mount cutters are available at a low price, you'll save money and gain flexibility. Showgard mounts seem to be a pretty standard, quality mount, there are similar other makes. Try Potomac Stamps, they carry a wide selection and have never failed me. Generally speaking.....certain styles of stamps fit a particular sized mount....like many US definitive over the years go well in a 25 mount. What stamps are you trying to mount? What style of mount are you using, split back or the open sided variety?

Here's another site to consider: www.brooklyngallery.com . Have not used them, but people on other threads here have spoken highly of them. From their ad in November large Linn's Stamp News.

Also, if you're "good" with your hands, don't waste money on a mount cutter. I've been putting stamps in mount strips for 30+ years and then using scissors. I have yet to "cut" a stamp.

Since everyone uses a "different size" or #, I think the best and easiest way to buy mounts of the correct size is to choose the brand you want and ask the seller to provide you with a mount for X x Y size stamp. That way if the wrong size arrives they should take them back and send the proper ones with no shipping charges to you.

As for cutting I have ordered a cutter as I purchased many collections and see a lot of collections with scissor cut mounts and usually they stand out for being cut usually at a bit of an angle rather than square and 90% at the corner.

I used to cut my mounts with a utility knife and a ruler, but then I inherited my uncle's Showgard Orthomatic Cutter, and I don't know how I lived without it.

A cutter is more than not cutting a stamp. It is cutting it squarely and evenly. If you use black mounts, off angle cuts stand out but obviously it make not be a big deal for some.

Why pay for it? Ask for it as a Christmas gift. I have had a Showgard cutter for years.

I want to thank each of you for your advice. I have tried iHobb and was very impressed. I needed a large size cover mount and got their 264/108 and they worked great.

I am also thinking more about getting a cutter as my scissor skills are not very good. LOL It may be necessary as I continue to look into foreign stamps and covers.

I checked out Global stamps and the web site looks easy and they have a good list of pre-size mounts which I prefer for ease especially for the US stamps and covers,

Thanks, oceanbert

I have been stocking up on Hawid clear toploads over the past few months and the cheapest per pack price I have found has been Wizard Coin Supply.

Half the price of many of the big name dealers. Quick ship and I have had no problems with them.

I am big fan of Global Stamps for their great service and free shipping for orders over $25 but if you are buying a lot of mounts you can get them cheaper elsewhere. It takes about 10 mounts before other sellers start to be competitive.

angore: I've been cutting mount strips long enough that my cut shapes are square.

I've used the same Showguard Stamp Mount Cutter for decades and it still works perfectly. I'd recommend no other!
