Greetings again and Merry Christmas! I haven't posted much here in quite awhile but I do still paruse the site. Lemme explain... I've done all I can in collecting US stamps, the only stamps I've ever been interested in. I can't afford to go any further. Except...Hawaii became a US state in 1959, and in my brain (probably only my brain), I would consider it a US stamp from Aug 21, 1959 onward. (Well it's an excuse to collect something again anyway). But I know nothing...nothing about collecting Hawaiian stamps. For e.g., what album is best, what catalog(s) to use, what to look out for in identifying them, etc. Is there anyone here who is a serious enough collector of Hawaiian stamps who could guide me? Also, there are too many sellers who are "someone just sends me this stuff and I sell it" sellers around and how best to avoid them if possible. I would appreciate any help in these areas. -IBFS

Do you want to collect Kingdom, Republic, Territory or State? Early Hawaii are expensive. It looks like The Missionaries are out. Hawaii became a State in 1959 so will you start there and collect postmarks? Do you have a Scott Catalogue? |

Hawaii has been using US stamps since it became a Territory in 1900. In 1959 Hawaii became a State and continued to use US postage stamps as it does today.

Why not try the Canal Zone? It was a US possession and used many overprinted US stamps through the years. Although the earliest stamps were US stamps overprinted with "Canal Zone" and "Panama" plus Colombian stamps overprinted with "Panama" and then overprinted with "Canal Zone", later stamps were US and Panamanian issues with a "Canal Zone" overprint. Beginning in 1928, the Canal Zone had their own dedicated postage stamps which lasted until1979. At one time, there were 17 post offices in the Canal Zone, all operated by the US Government. Palo has album pages for the Canal Zone as does Mystic (?I think?). Here is a link to a long running thread on the Canal Zone: https://goscf.com/t/7629&SearchTerms=Canal,zone |

I Brake For Stamps, The 1894-99 2-cent Hawaii stamp is a fascinating issue to specialize in for plate varieties, and these stamps are common and inexpensive. See this thread for more on the re-entry (double transfer) varieties for this stamp. https://goscf.com/t/55774 |
