Here is part of another Club Auction Lot I picked up a while ago from a country that I hadn't seriously collected before. These serpentine roulettes really jump out at you! Unfortunately, most of these aren't in great condition, so I'm not sure if they are worth much.

Just curious, does anyone have some better examples of these to show?

You have a nice find there. If you decide to go ahead and study you will find out that the perfs are notoriously fragile and pull of quite easily. There is generally a nice premium for intact ones. I agree that this is a great area to collect.

FYI, the catalogue values in the regular Scott volumes for the serpentine roulettes are misleading if you don't read the boxed note at the beginning of the section. Those catalogue values are for stamps with NO missing teeth.

The Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue also gives prices for examples with missing teeth, and the values drop off considerably from the values for no missing teeth.

Not opened my Finland Album for some years,
I believe these two were a gift from my late friend "Ralphael the Old one"
(Florida)

Thanks folks!

...and yes, I saw the note in Scott, but still even at 5% of SC$ they are worth more than the usual 2-bits!

I think I paid the reserve of $8.00 or $10.00 for all 25 pages of this lot, though. I've only gone through the first 3 pages and I'm not the least bit disappointed or discouraged so far!

(I was going to upload images of the 1st 5 pages, but can't seem to get the image optimizer to work very well on a letter sized scan without losing all the detail.)

Anyhow, these stamps on page 1 were the only damaged ones I've found so far. Page 2 and 3 have Scott value of $724.60 so I'm thinking I could've done much worse!

Perf12 -

Yeah, that #5 looks okay, except the pen cancel under the regular one worries me a little bit though...

1st version of finland has prices listed for both cancelled, cancelled with ink, and just ink.
not sure why this was the case, in most other countries, only a very weak cancel on a stamp would require the mailman to use a pen on it... but in finland you have both on a regular basis.

these issues come in different perforations and are a pain to figure out I think. on top of different paper types.

from what I read in facit a normal cross over like you have is described as: Normal crossing out: reduced value. there are some special manuscript cancellations specific for some towns or postmasters and they increase the value instead.

Finland is an interesting area.

Yes, but it's not too much of a pain (only three different types related to the length of the fingers) Rod222's examples from "Ralphael the Old one" (MHRIP) are the two extremes (I think). The biggest pain to me seems to be finding any that aren't all torn up!

...but they are still interesting.

Looks like they abandoned the style, judging from what's on the top of page 2 in my $10 lot:

Al, you can have a lot of fun collecting the cancellations fro this era (1865-93) of Finland. Here are 3 examples. A LOJO (now Lohja) cancel, a cork cancel, and an ankuftstempel (arrival stamp).

yes I love this coat of arms edition from Finland, whilst my main interest lies with danish bicoloured I also work with the Ringtype of sweden, the norwegian posthorn, the icelandic oval, and finnish coat of arms.. all of which are from the same time period.

i'm sure it's the same elsewhere, but there are just so much interesting stuff in this period in Scandinavia.

How can I tell the difference between an SC 7 and an SC 7a?
What is the Y in crest and or is it only the color? How can I tell which is which? Finland Roulette as topic here. Colors fade depending on conditions and dyes. I have looked at them and I cannot see another difference. Enlighten me.
