I began collecting in 1974, at the age of 9, when I received a letter from my grandmother franked with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow stamp (Scott #1548). I was fascinated by this stamp and immediately began collecting. I collected until I went away to college, when it fell by the wayside in lieu of girls, cars, baseball, and studying.
Fast forward 30 some odd years and I decided to sell my businesses and retire early due to my health. Even though I had spurts of activity with my stamp collection throughout the years, I never really had much time to devote to it until I retired.
Although I will collect anything worldwide that catches my eye, my main areas of interest are:
1) US until 2000 including Hawaii and Canal Zone
2) Canada and provinces until 2000
3) German Third Reich, inflation issues, and colonies
4) South Africa and predecessor states until 2000
5) Scandinavia (especially Iceland) until 2000
6) Rhodesia until 1980
7) French Polynesia until 2000
8) South West Africa/Namibia until 2000
9) Portuguese African colonies
10) Australia and states until 2000
11) British Virgin Islands until the present
12) Papua New Guinea until 2000
I realize that this is a lot of areas to specialize in, but I am not a "flyspeck" philatelist. I'm not interested in various shades of color, different plate numbers, etc. If I can obtain one example of face different stamps, I'm happy. While I will probably never complete any of these areas, I have fun trying!
