I bought a new Gibbons Windsor album for Christmas and spent today remounting some of my British on the new pages. I took it up again after Dinner and suddenly noticed the first page of the album had what looked like salsa dropped on it. A little fragment of a tomato had soaked almost through the page and also left an angry red stain.
Of course this was the page with several Penny Blacks and some Two Pence blues. No stamps were damaged but the page itself is ruined. I was planning an order to Gibbons soon so can request a replacement page.
I am just mystified how or what happened. I always wash my hands before working on stamps. About the only thing I can think of is this food particle must have been on a sleeve and fallen off. Maybe this will serve as a reminder to others to always double check that your hands and clothing contain nothing that could drop off and harm your stamps. Just weird.
Unfortunate, but life happens! Just be thankful it did not do a Salsa down onto the penny blacks and twopenny blues. It then would have been you appearing stained a bit red.
Time for a new page but take the stamps out and try a spot of bleach anyway.
One of the things that I do very often is remove blood stains from clothes (part of having two large #15 needles stuck in my arm every other day). Hydrogen peroxide is the stain remover of choice for any organic stain whether it is blood or tomato juice. I would give some fresh hydrogen peroxide a try before spending money on a new page. (Note you must use a fresh bottle, it loses a lot of capability after it has been opened for a few weeks.) Don
