Welcome to the community, Caretaker! Folks on here are very helpful with this sort of thing, but they usually need a good quality scan or photograph to help you positively identify what you're looking at :) If your "old chap" is looking to sell his collection, there are many resources you can utilize to help him do that. Buyers will sometimes buy individual items if they are high value, but usually places will buy in bulk. Just be careful because some places will not buy everything you have even if you want to get rid of it all. There are places out there that will take everything though. You might consider getting ahold of a stamp collecting magazine or catalog to help you out :)
