Hi Robert,
The domain name expired; someone may have forgotten to pay for it. But it has been now renewed but only for one month. This seems to indicate someone thinking whether or not to keep the site running. Or it could be the domain name exprired and someone else quickly purchased the domain name for profit/resale.

If anyone knows the owner of the original content, you might let them know that I would be wiling to publish the content on Stamp Smarter if they do not want to keep the site going.

Hi Don

I have a friend who has purchased 2 massive map stamp collections and wants to re-write map stamp every thing...Are you sure you want to be part of this huge transition until it has been done..Then it would be easier to take care of..

I stand ready to support whatever the scope of the project (large/small or old/new). I just hate to see old sites go dark after folks put effort into them.

Might I suggest using github for the sites content? This way even if the site goes away, the code/contentt can stay open source with community

Sure, if you do not mind people who ripoff sites without permission. These sites are lame. Try pouring a few thousand man hours into your own site only to have these sites steal all the content and then see if you recommend them.

There is a lot of software avaiable to download a whole site and store it on your own computer. I have done it once when the owner of a site died suddenly and I hated to think that all its content might be lost and I was not sure if the Way Back Machine would have kept it.

Of course there is no point of doing that if the site is still active.

AQ,
Understood, that is like buying a book or some music and making a copy for your own personal use. I have no real heartburn with that.

But scarfing an entire website and then republishing without permission is not right or ethical on any level. Talk about crushing any incentive for those who have websites or are thinking about pouring many man hours and/or dollars into a website. Why bother? Folks will just go to Wayback or one of the other pirates and support them instead of the people who dedicated countless hours and money to help our hobby.

And why should anyone consider trying to save the Maps site or go to the trouble to reach out to the original owners and do this the right way? Screw it, just go to Wayback.

"Catheterize"? So much information for such a small bandwidth...

Thanks for the chuckle. Don Cherry would call it a beauty!

I know there are people out there that disagree with what some one did with WAY-BACK (or any other informational gather soft ware).

These guys have spent a lot of hard work to prepare, categorized and identify information for the Map Stamp website for stamp collectors to read, obtain information on the hobby they love.

Their hard work should not go in vain...They DESERVE to have their hard work to be (continuously) recognized in the stamp world.

The way I look at it is, if it was not continued because of monetary, or personal family reasons, WE (the stamp world) should respect their hard work and keep their endevour alive and give full recognition of their work for all stamp collectors every where.

Wrong or not, that is how I feel

ME BAD..haha

Spoken as a person who has never donated/volunteered a lot of time/money to building a website. Go invest hundred of hours and a lot of money into a website only to have Wayback steal it and then come back and tell me what you think.
