Dan speaks the truth.

While we do what we can in keeping this a friendly forum, we also strive to embrace a wide variety opinions and personalities. Native language deltas can also sometimes cause problems. Standard forum perspectives always applies; the option to simply ignore another person's post is sometimes the best approach. Remember...it is often impossible to control others but we ALWAYS have the ability to control ourselves.

Yes, those are common stamps and a few are damaged. But, so what? I know I started out in 1960 collecting common stamps. I strongly suspect that all of us began our collecting by having fun with common stamps. Congratulations also to the gentleman for getting his album half full. That is quite an accomplishment

If you are happy with your purchase then that's all that counts, no matter what some might say or think. Enjoy sorting through your stamps!

Thanks for the look! Quite interesting to those of us who like cancels and things that are not run-of-the-mill.
  • The Luzern/Lucerne cancel is unremarkable but is socked-on-the-nose and dates the stamp
  • The special handling stamp has a Yermo, California boxed 3rd class cancel, from a small town; hope you'll consider it a keeper
  • Mexico 10c with oddball perfs
  • Estland SOTN cancel on the Natal stamp

Nothing rare but great fun.

Well, I think it was a good buy, And that liberty with the San Fran overstamp makes my mouth water; Wish I had her.

A number of those stamps might not be worth a buck, but they are worth more than a dime. I wouldn't mind paying $20 for a bunch of stamps I didn't have. And I have never seen a Special Handling stamp that was used.

I have a contrarian view here. While the response being blasted was harsh, it is undeniable that it was true. I think a pure Polyanna approach to these type situations does a disservice as well; please note that the OP intends now to buy lots like this one "every Saturday morning". Long term, I don't believe that is good for the OP or the hobby. And note that the original post was not an inquiry at all but a statement implying that his purchase was a great deal. A dose of reality was needed; it was just done too harshly in my opinion.

How so? Certainly stamp club elitists would probably bar Gswarrioroz510 from membership if they knew he buys lots like this; sellers/dealers that only sell stamps for $5 and up wouldn't even want to talk to the OP. No loss for Gs. Perhaps forgotten is that the vast majority of stamps are penny/nickel/dime items. Do collectors only collect US 1847 and 1851 issues, complete earlier Commonwealth sets to the pound value and suchlike?

Gs stated that he got a box and an old starter-type album for his $20. What was shown was a sample, as I am also assuming he did not mean a matchbox, but something larger. Your statement implies you know otherwise; how was that possible?

And it depends on how you figure value. Your view apparently is that it's all about the Benjamins. If (say) 4-5 hours was spent going through the lot, that's cheap entertainment for these days and worth it on that basis in my figuring. And give Gs some respect in having the ability to stop buying for a time, after a while or forever if it so suits. I sense enthusiasm there, not obsession, just as I sense a killjoy in the reply post.

Despite the recent release of another Mary Poppins movie, I don't think your assuming the role of anyone's nanny is appropriate. Just my opinion.

What hy-brasil said. If Gswarriorz510 is enthusiastic about and enjoys his purchase, how is this bad for the hobby? It is, after all, his collection. It's impossible to put a dollar amount on the enthusiasm and excitement shown by Gswarriorz510 over his purchase.

We all must remember the 1 rule of stamp collecting and that rule is there are no rules. One mans junk is another mans treasure. Do some of the stamps have condition issues? Sure. Is there really anyone who didn't start out collecting 10 cent stamps? What about the joy of learning? As mentioned above this is only a handful of what was purchased. Kudos to Gs for sharing his / her excitement with us.

Sometimes I'm right and I can be wrong
My own beliefs are in my song
The butcher, the banker, the drummer and then
Makes no difference what group I'm in
I am everyday people, yeah yeah

There is a blue one who can't accept the green one
For living with a fat one trying to be a skinny one
And different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on and scooby dooby doo

Oh sha sha we got to live together
I am no better and neither are you
We are the same whatever we do
You love me you hate me you know me and then
You can't figure out the bag I'm in
I am everyday people, yeah yeah

There is a long hair that doesn't like the short hair
For bein' such a rich one that will not help the poor one
And different…

I am not an elitist and am not trying to be anyone's nanny. The OP and everyone else should collect whatever they want whenever they want. When I began collecting, I bought a lot of things I later regretted, simply because I was not experienced. I just think it would be better if others did not have to go through that.
