I would have thought that the completeness of ornament "X" was enough to say for certain that it is a Relief "A" example. |

It is - I didn't spend really any time on it the other day. A it is.
My 1 second go-to for these is the break above T in postage or not as a quick tell, but there was a cancel there, and I was busy. Good eye. |

So the Robert S Boyd sale at Cherrystone auctions, has a lengthy article inside of the hard copy auction catalog itself, that publishes Bob Boyd and Dick Celler's state of the art work on their plate 11 plating project. Any serious 1c plater will want to obtain a copy of this article, these two people made more progress on Plate 11 than anyone else ever has. Its too bad they both passed away before either was able to fully publish. I believe that the auction house put together the article probably as partially written by Bob, but based upon Bob's current draft and/or notes. Thanks to Cherrystone for doing that! Back in 2019, Dick had clued me in on quite a bit of the plate characteristics of the plate that they had discovered, and he allowed me to publish the small writeup I did here : https://goscf.com/t/65663&whichpage=5#587619on "The Plate 11 Layout Lines". I do not know if there is an online pdf of just the article, but I hope that there is, or that one will be made available at some point. edit: ack, I meant to include a Stamp Auction Network Auction link to the sale: https://stampauctionnetwork.com/X/X0925.cfm |

For some more background, Bob told me that he had actually written and submitted this article before the one published in the CHRONICLE as "The Need for 1c Plates in 1860" but that the CHRONICLE section editor thought a context-setting piece was needed first. |

Quote: context-setting piece was needed first. That's too bad. The people most interested in that article already mostly know the context. But I can understand wanting to cater to a larger readership better. Mortality and getting key research published sooner, rather than later, is, actually a fair thing for publishers to consider. Wilson Hulme passed away before the Travers Papers were published ... it finally got done, but still ... many other stories. |

I haven't seen it mentioned in this thread, but Cherrystone Auctions is selling Bob Boyd's 1851-61 collection. Cherrystone has posted a copy of Bob's exhibit on their webpage. Much of Bob's research is reflected in the exhibit. I was fortunate to see the exhibit at NAPEX in 2023. The exhibit was far too wordy to compete for the top exhibit awards, but it is a great monograph to read at your leisure. The .pdf file is under the "About Us" tab on the webpage. https://auctions.cherrystoneauction...anding.aspx# I would post a direct link, but the .pdf file is over 300 Mb. |

Yep nice stamp, definitely plate 11.
I believe I see a partial vertical right-side layout line. You can consult the Boyd article, or my writeup -- unless they made any corrections from the information Dick gave me in 2019 - for a list of columns for your stamp. |

The Robert S. Boyd collection of U.S. 1851-61 Stamps and Postal History auction is this Tuesday, September 9 at 10:00 am (EST). A ton of high quality, nice material and all proceeds benefiting charities that he chose. A substantial collection of Plate 11 as well as additional material. Cherrystone available through SAN and their website. Great material and a good cause. mark |

81-92L11 unused og, all B reliefs. Ex Klein, Wagshal, Boyd. Including this, I've seen 3 blocks from Plate 11 so far. There are probably a couple more, so, about 5 known or so at a rough guess. I was happy to get this in the Boyd sale. |

I really cannot add to this discussion, except to state really nice stamps. Ex Boyd . When I saw the catalogue I knew I wanted something from the sale, I scored one of my bids. I saw the block of 4 and was blown away by the beauty of the offering.Very Nice. I'm glad it went to a knowledgeable philatelist. "I was happy to get this in the Boyd sale." I am glad you got it too! Cheers mark |

I am happy that you were able to get something.
Overall I think the sale should be considered a success. It felt pretty good to me. There were some fairly decent realizations on better items. There were a modest number of passed lots, but one has to expect that when you individually list a lot of similar specialized material. Also some of the group lots had fairly strong reserves. |

I think Boyd sale had remarkably good realizations. Definitely a sale geared toward plating and interesting plate positions over grading/soundness and centering that seems to dominate US market. Nice to see there are collectors looking for this material and not just a stamp with a grade of 90 plus. |
