Hello - New Member Introduction

So hello from a new member as of 0121.... I've been looking for a site to join to get started again with collecting - did a little when I was much younger - anew. I have to get me going some stuff of my father's that I will be cataloging and then will try to figure out an area for me to hopefully follow up on - maybe some sort of topical area as conservation, space and air, architecture or even military.... just trying to figure it out now.

When I was a kid, I mostly just stuck the stamps in the album, willie nilly and didnt pay attention to the fine details - history or particulars of the issue - hoping to improve there and learn a little now. I still have my old Minkus "The New Worldwide Stamp Album", but as I've found out I can no longer get the US pages to bring it to 1983-85 which is where most of my US stuff is from. But now Im working on some of the stuff my dad left - odds and ends from Germany, pre WWII to late 50's. I have to say, there's a lot out there - went to my 1st show this past w/e and my head was swimming before I left.

Catching on to the terminology and meaning of print on the stamps - the German ones - to help in determining the era - somewhat confusing as I have no experience to say. It took me forever to get to the OFFICIALS STAMPS section to id some of the below (they were in a mislabeled envelope). Anyhow, some of what I am trying to get are the Scott no's for the below - Im having trouble id'ing what granite paper is? I also dont know the correct terminology to try and figure out why the 60 is X'd out. I've read that the values changed and they just re marked the stamps?? Also confusing are the compass marks going right and left - I can't id them bc I dont know granite paper or how to see the watermark if there is one. One dealer at the show said he sometimes uses lighter fluid on the stamp??? Anyhow 3 the green ones are the 1st ones im looking for the Scott no's and the ship one is the one im interested on why the no. is X'd out and trying to id the 50 pf one too. Any help is appreciated and im looking forward t learning and being able to one day contribute too! I did see an older post with some of the same compass stamps, but didnt know if there way a time limit in resurrecting older posts - so sorry if this is the wrong spot to start this one. Tks!! Wm.

Top left stamp in second scan down is granite paper. Notice the colored fibers.

Granite Paper:

If it has threads, generally blue red or black, it is granite, sometimes hard to pick up, need a loupe.

Terminology:
Values are crossed out and new values inserted called "Surcharged"

A Stamp Catalogue is needed to ID these stamps in correct order.



The stamps designer and engraver can sometimes be shown below stamp design, this is referred to as the "imprint"

Thanks both for the feedback! Haven't figured out yet how to quote in a reply - but working on it. If anyone can confirm the Scott numbers much appreciated. And the valuation x 'd out..... Also wondering - guessing the glue is missing due to being soaked? All stamps get glued right? Tks again. Hope this is the right forum to keep this going.

PS: The term is "gummed" in preference to glued.

Pricing:
Most stamps are worth just a few cents to a few dollars.
Rather than continuing to ask for valuations, purchase a cheap Worldwide stamp catalogue, can be had for $5 to $10
It can be 10 years old, no problem, this will at least give you a clue
to rarities or stamps worth asking here for current value.

Tks for the help. I don't remember asking for valuations - sorry if I did. When I wrote valuations x'd out - I was referring to the valuation on the the stamp - postage rate - not how much it's worth in today's dollars / cents. My intention is not to value what I have as much as it to learn the subtleties of the art of collecting stamps and developing a new hobby. There is much to learn and a wide breadth to choose from - which makes it more challenging. Thanks for the help re: the search function. I did a search as mentioned but did not know if there was a time limit in resurrecting older posts as mentioned. I got an earful on another board once for doing so and I was t sure what best practices are here. Also had a little trouble finding newer posts bc I didn't know the correct terminology for my search - hope to get better at it. Thanks for the link to the one you gave - I'll follow up on it. It's 7 years old now and I had trouble with some of the photos coming up - is it okay to bring it back up? I did get a Scott catalogue and it's very helpful - thought I mentioned how long it took me to get to the Officials section as the envelope the stamp was in was mislabeled. Had a little difficulty bc I couldn't determine granite paper vs non and some of the other nuances. Hope to improve on that and contributing here. Tks again for the help.
