Hi

Trying to catalog this stamp using Scott. There are two colors listed. Black and Brown. Also, this is either a trimmed stamp or maybe imperf. I do not have another one to compare it to.

This stamp is blue. Even more so than the later issue:

Is the earlier stamp known in this color and imperf?

A trimmed down example of the 1887 issue I'd say.

Hope this helps

It's fun to note that the first stamp shows some impressive claws on the seal. This is because the designers in American Bank Note Company in New York had never seen the animal, and were told (allegedly) that it was like a sea lion. They had never seen one of those either, so they gave it claws. The error was corrected on the later issue.

The original engraving was based on a real seal, possibly the ringed seal or the grey seal, both of which do indeed have claws and are native to parts of Newfoundland. Ring seal:

Hi Gettinold.

The Newfoundland seal stamps have seen a few changes/ varieties.
Scott #25 Brown 1865

Scott #26 Black 1868

Scott #40 Blue 1879. Newfoundland only issued 4 different rouletted stamps, ending with this one in 1879.

The design error of the claws was corrected for the 1880 issue.
