In the Scott Classic Catalog, for Great Britain #1, there are a number of different catalog values that can be chosen based on expert certified plate number and type of Maltese Cross Cancel.
If one has an expert certified plate number identified, as well as, a confirmed Maltese Cross cancel, do you just use the catalog value for the correctly identified plate number? Or the value for the Maltese Cross cancel? Or a combination of both values?
If the stamp hasn't been plated, or if there is no identified "distinctive" fancy cancel, go with the lowest value for the condition.
If you have a stamp that is plated to a scarcer plate, use that value. If you have a common stamp with a distinctive cancellation, use that value.
If you have both, use the higher of the two values (plate or cancel) and add a bit more. You won't likely get a multiple of the premiums.
For example: - Plate 11 with a Manchester fishtail MX will be plate 11 + a bit - maybe 25% more. - Plate 10 with a Channel Island MX will be valued for the cancellation + a bit - maybe 10-25% more.
I have a plate 1B stamp (common) with an inverted watermark (uncommon) with an 1844 numeral cancellation (uncommon). If I was looking at it for the inverted watermark, I'd probably not pay much extra for the cancellation. However, if I was looking for a penny black with an 1844 cancellation, I'd probably not pay much extra for the inverted watermark.
