Happy news!

An important book about Nicholas Seebeck has been 1) updated, and 2) made available via download without charge.

Seebeck: Hero or Villain? was first published in 1985 by Danilo A Mueses.

A second edition - edited, revised, and expanded by Michael Schrieber - came available as a PDF in October 2018.

You can find a download link at the United Postal Stationery Society (UPSS), to wit:

Fabulous *.pdf
Thank you very much.
Look forward to reading.

Update:
The *.pdf appears to be 2 pages per view.
Anyone know if there is a way to view one page at a time?

Hi Rod,

This should be in the view options under the settings of the program you're using.

Let us know if you have no luck and tell us the program you use.

I have taken the liberty of re-formatting the PDF to the more-familiar 184 single pages.

PM with your eMail address, and I'll send you that 'edition'.

Hi ikeypikey

Thanks for the Seebeck link. I was going to e-mail the link in the APS journal for a copy of the book.

As a Latin American collector (Ecuador) the book will be handy. Nicholas is really a pain in the tush.

Also thanks for the other links. I will check them out.

The Calman Brothers

In December 1885, Gustave Bernhard Calman and his brother Henry Lincoln Calman agreed to purchase J. Walter Scott's first incorporated retail stamp business from Scott, named J.W. Scott and Co.

A stipulation of the deal required that the Calmans rename the company to Scott Stamp & Coin Co., which they did.

Gustave Calman also maintained his own wholesale stamp business. He was the largest stamp wholesaler of his era, circa 1880 to 1898.

Rod,

The SCF software eats Wayback Machine links, so I can't hyperlink it, but copy and paste this URL to get the article you 404ed above.

Darn it!

I was all ready to re-broadcast Ron's self-confessed "Thereby broadcasting my ineptitude with IT" by offering ...

{ Seebeck site:paultalbot.com }

... as the obvious IT-literate solution (sans curly brackets) but, sadly, the article is actually gone (as opposed to only the URL having changed).

There's always next year

Cheers,

From April 1884 until he died in June 1899, Seebeck worked for the Hamilton Bank Note Engraving and Printing Co.

Seebeck held various elected company offices, as chosen by the company's elected trustees. In most years, he was general manager, but in some years he also served as secretary, treasurer, vice president, or president.

Was Hamilton Bank Note Engraving and Printing Co. Seebeck's company? No. It was a company, not a sole proprietorship.

When he bought into the company in 1884, he was a one-sixth owner. As general manager over many years, Seebeck was the person who made the company successful and profitable.

The large illustration used on the front cover of the free e-book Seebeck: Hero or Villain? is from an 1890s stereo card showing the 6th Avenue Elevated Railway in New York City. See image.

The major business of the Hamilton Bank Note Engraving and Printing Co. was manufacturing strip tickets for passengers using the city's elevated railways and bridges, in the pre-subway era.

Nicholas F. Seebeck was a stamp collector himself.

He collected the stamps of the German States and the stamps of the Confederate States of America.

His CSA collection sold at auction after Seebeck died in 1899. I do not know when it sold or the name of the house that sold it.

Thanks for this Michael, I saw the book mentioned in the current APS magazine if I recall and thought it was highly interesting. Not having gone into any depth with Central and South American issues, it is all new to me.
