Looking for recommendations, software, to replace my Classic ACDSee. Has to be blindingly fast, and the ability to search 200,000 images via text -string and offer a sub-set of images. Faststone is great, but lacks any find / search option. Or, Anyone has the Classic ACDSee, I can buy (Price no object) has to have the Full Plugins, and work on Win 7. (I think it was ACDSee 3.5?) Mine crashes now.

Have you considered trying the current version of ACDSee Photo Studio Standard 2019? |

Quote: Have you considered trying the current version of ACDSee Photo Studio Standard 2019? Hi Postmaster, Trying to........ Noticed it was only $39, so downloaded free trial, loaded, then asked for current email, typed that in. Message : "Will send you a temporary Password" etc That was 20 minutes ago, still waiting. Crossing all my fingers and toes, ACDSee is in my DNA, used it for 20 years. I tried ACDSee Vers 6, and it was (for my Win 7) bloated and slow. May suit when I get my new computer. |

ACDSee Photo Studio Standard. 3 minute road test. For what I am used to...absolute rubbish. Caveat: I need to play for a few weeks, but initial opinion is terrible. Black horrible interface, Doing a search ! come on....Sheesh. ACDSee want you to establish... 1. The first word known in your text string ..what! 2. The folder it resides in (Hey ! I am there already.) 3. Navigate (possibly 12 clicks) before you get there In my 1997 Classic ACDSee (4 keystrokes) ....F3 umb ...and Bang! I have every umbrella stamp in 200,000 stamps. Watching it work is a pure Symphony. |

Rod,
I figured that would have been the result. Software tends to become more powerful over time, but at the expense of ease of use.
From the error message above, your old version appears to be 3.1. You might try just Googling "acdsee 3.1". There are websites that post old versions of software for free download. Do you still have accesss to the serial number for your current copy to register a newly downloaded copy?

Rod, What you need is a geeky guy who collects software applications like stamps. A guy who has an entire closet full of software. A guy who is your friend. Hmmm, wonder who the guy might be? Don FYI, you can change the interface color here (under Options) |

Hi Guys, Quote: Do you still have accesss to the serial number for your current copy to register a newly downloaded copy?
Yes I do, Postmaster, I purchased the genuine old program, the CD has been lost. Quote: Software tends to become more powerful over time, but at the expense of ease of use.
Succinctly put..... Problem: The "Classic" comes in 2 flavours which is endlessly irritating. One, the program is stable, I have it, but it will not display an image subset, it tells me sorta "120 images suit text string search buffalo" When I go to view it will only show 1 image. The unstable version searches the text string, the shows all images as a subset... just a beautiful thing. But randomly crashes, sometimes daily, sometimes it will work for a few months. I shall endeavor to get you the "build numbers" of each Postmaster. Don, had to have a chuckle here........... Name your price I need to find the build number, I'll post back later today Quote: FYI, you can change the interface color here (under Options) Great! Thank you, I am becoming more used to the very rich program, but I don't think it will win me over, my requirements aren't that deep, speed being the essence. |

I have been looking at my archives this morning and playing with the older versions; I found installing and using the older version is pretty tricky with the newer operating systems.
After testing, I would highly recommend using at least version ACDsee Photo Manager 12. (Even if you get the <2006 versions to run, the next version OS are likely to cause new issues.) Version 12 is full featured, supports the more recent operating systems (like Win7 and Win10), and is still similar enough to the older versions that it should not give you heartburn. It is also quite fast. Email me for details. Don |

Don, as an aside, I have 20 year old software programs, not a clue what they are. We owned a student accommodation complex for some years in Thailand, these are leftovers from rooms after vacating. Math, Statistics etc. (English)
I was about to ditch them after searching for my ACDSee disks.
Any interest?

(Even through it appears the Stage 4 cancer is currently in remission, I have now exceed the average life expectancy for a person on dialysis.) So thank you for the offer but I really do not want to burden my wife with more stuff to disposition! Adding more stuff is going in the wrong direction for me! Don |

Quote: I found installing and using the older version is pretty tricky with the newer operating systems. Seems so, Don, I'll have to surrender. I found the *.exe file in my old Win 98 re install files It worked for about 5 minutes then crashed, trying to address differing memory perhaps. A good friend lost forever........... This was the best "build" for the subset return. |

I would try a complete uninstall and reinstall. I would also try launching it in 'compatibility' mode (right click the .exe file) or 'run as administrator'. If all else fails, email me and we will see about getting you upgraded using my old copy. Don |

Rod,
Have you changed anything on your computer recently? That error code (c0000005) is related to a memory access issue, but it's not always caused by the app you think is causing it (in this case, ACDSee).
If you're willing to try a few things, we might be able to figure this out by checking Windows event logs and tracing the problem. Your call on whether you think it's worth the effort. |

Or install (free) Teamviewer and allow either Postmaster or myself to have remote access to your computer. (You can watch as we navigate around and troubleshoot the PC). This is by FAR the fastest and easiest way to support someone. Of course, you have to implicitly trust the person doing it.... Don |

Quote: Have you changed anything on your computer recently? Hi Guys, gee, feel like I am being a pain in the butt. Yes, HUGE changes, I installed "Glary Utilities" which was amazing, my computer went from an old snail, to lightning fast. No other problems after installing it, it regularly checks for Malware, and cleans the registry once a month, defrags my disk in a few minutes. I'll try the administrator thing first and do a reinstall, if nothing works I'd like to do the "team view " thing, I have nothing to hide on my computer. If you guys have the time. Willing to pay a reasonable impost. The "sub set" ability is the cornerstone of what I do, as a WW collector if I have 300 stamps come in for say Turkey, I can sort my 300 into values, 1 click and I can see / compare every 2 Piaster , or whatever, stamp in my collection, I can then save that new stamp or put it into duplicate year lot, for re-sale. I can get through hundreds of new stamps in a jiffy that way. If you want me to take this off forum, just holler. PS: Don, any idea why I do not have a "Youtube" option on my thread post frame? |
