If my understanding is correct, this premium service was mainly for London and surrounding areas. There was a morning cutoff time for that evening's service. If you were outside London, the cutoff time was earlier. Service was from London to Dover, and then across the channel.
You could circumvent the cutoff time (for one, or several hours) by paying a late fee, which was not always apparent from the franking, or "late fee" markings on the cover.
Please let me know if I am in error. Thanks again all.
I cannot find anything on Continental Night Mail, in any of my references, including "Collect British Postmarks"
The Service was available as early as 1884, yet no images in Hendy, some brief notes only. There exists a lovely Duplex hammer with the killer a multi Bar CX1
My understanding matches yours.
London and Southampton were packet offices for the Continental mails,
