It looks like a stencil cancel, but I have not seen it before. Nice cancel.

No, they generally are uncommon. Value would depend on who sees it. The stamp has issues of both damage and centering, so it totally comes down to how badly someone wants the cancel.

Stylistically, I would have gone towards photographer, as there were many who used small-format stencil cancels, but the date on the stamp is a full 5 years after the expiration of the tax on photos. I'm going to lean proprietary.

I've not seen this particular stencil before. Very nice.

Here is a link to the various stencils in my collection. They are uncommon as cancel types go:

great info, thank you very much, and love the collection on line. I now understand what it originated from.

i will be open, its not something I want to hold on to. if I have a rough idea of value I can decide what to do with it, sell or gift away (here).

would you be willing to give me a rough estimate?

I tried sending you email, but you have email contact disabled here. It is an item I would be interested in for my stencil collection. I hesitate to put a value on it as it could be considered a conflict of interest, being interested in it, and I don't want to get into a public bidding war here on the forum.

If it were fully attributed it could be worth more than without identification. It's not a complete strike and the underlying stamp isn't the greatest, *BUT* it is by all indications a scarce cancel. Depending on the seller or venue, I could see it in the US$10-25 range. More if sold by Eric or Richard.

This ends up being a judgement-call assessment, and others here may value it higher or lower.

Late use, a month before the second issue and 2 months before the proprietaries were issued. Much more likely that it was a documentary use. Given the condition, value probably somewhere between $25-$40. There is no catalog for this type of item, so it's really just experience and a "gut feel".

Nice one.
And revenuecollector, thanks for that link to the collection. It's too bad this site doesn't support a "resources" type-environment. I would never have seen this if I hadn't been randomly reading this post...

Revenuecollector -
I was looking at your stencil cancels. You have a Thos. J. Lancaster stencil identified as a New York Cancel. I have a different Thos. J. Lancaster Stencil with a 332 Walnut Street address, so I assume he was in Philadelphia.

SPQR, you are correct. It is Philadelphia. I relied upon the attribution of the dealer from whom I purchased it, which not shockingly given who it is, was inaccurate. Thanks for the correction.
