Didn't even realize this was a perfin till it hit the right light. Looks to be miss "perfined" if such a term exist. If someone could ID the stamp and use of the perfin I would greatly appreiate. Sooner or later I'll get a US Catalog.

US/MC, the United Shoe Machinery Company, pattern 82-1, rarity factor E. The perfin exists from a number of different office locations, each one differing in the location of a single perfin hole. It's most likely that yours is an example of one without the control hole, making it the office in Boston, MA.

What does rarity factor E mean? What is the rarity factor scale?

Thanks!

Rarity factor E isn't very rare - only F is more common. There was a discussion recently on SCF about perfins and rarity factors, you might find some useful info there.

Here are some examples of what the full USMC (United Shoe) perfins should look like:

Note the difference in example #1 having two dots in the center; the others only one. Perhaps Ryan can identify which one is which is terms of location of use.

Your example with two control perfs is New York, NY. Your examples with one control perf are both Philadelphia, PA. There are a total of 18 different offices.

I believe the M inside the letter (U) is for the University of Missouri.

U of M (Appears in 2 forms) could be University of Minnesota.
