Since Dianne has a Machin project & thread underway, I have a dumb question...

What is the correct pronunciation of Machin?

I know the first syllable is MAY like the month. Is the second syllable CHIN like the one under my mouth or SHIN like the one on the front of my leg?

The correct pronunciation is "May-Chin", being named for Arnold Machin, the sculptor who originated the pas relief of The Queen that is the basis for the current design. And its May, as in the month and Chin as in that thing beneath your mouth and above and in front of your neck. There is a slight accent on the first syllable. I also suspect having a proper British accent helps to get this all right so we just try to make due down here in Chas SC.

Please see
http://www.gbmachins.co.uk/html/the..._design.html and http://www.adminware.ca/machin/m_intro.htm for this background.

Hope this helps,

Larry

Thanks, Larry:

I'm in Western North Carolina (near the Great Smoky Mountains), so I DEFINITELY understand about southern accents. I usually say that I'm fluent in Hillbilly and conversational in English

Gawd, I wish they would finally change the design...

They already have on the coins, twice, since the Machin bust made it's debut in the mid-60s...why not the stamps?

They (a great number of folks at the Post Office) have made suggestion that they change the design but when this has gotten to the Queen she has demurred and raised objections. These suggestion were more than mere suggestions and were quite developed. She apparently is quite wedded to the design so I suspect we might not see a change until the next monarch.

And, btw, there is talk that the Prince of Wales will not take the name Charles III since those progenitors weren't particularly attractive. He might take the name of his grandfather, so if that is the case, we could have KGVII. So, there might be something beyond KGVI.

She is lucky to get to freeze a moment in time for herself...it is a flattering profile, and has become quite the icon.

I have also heard some rumors that if the change of crown doesn't happen soon he may not take it at all but allow it to pass to his son, who is a very close relative to me :} :} :} He is my 11th cousin once removed. Think I'll get invited to the coronation?

You're a lock for some sort of elevated post Ziggy. Maybe you should ask to be the King's Postmaster or something.

We can only hope.

The guy is totally out of touch with reality, whining about new buildings and talking to plants. Had a gorgeous wife, but decided that horse-faced trollop that he's with now was better.

Charlie definitely fits Monty Python's Upper Class Twit to a T.

The kid is the best chance the dynasty has of survival, because he's human and can see beyond the Ivory Towers. He is definitely a credit to his mother, who laboured for years to make the monarchy public-friendly.

And besides, can you imagine Charlie in profile on a coin? The effigy would be all ears and nose.

In response to Glenn The Winnipegger's last post; all I can say is ...

Hear! Hear!

At the Remembrance Day Service, in downtown Ottawa, I had to salute when the Royal couple walked by... I saluted the horse.

Ouch. Y'all are being a little harsh on poor Charles -- and his horse-faced wife

As for the quantity of my stupid questions, I intended the "101" to be representative of introductory college course numbering, NOT as the actual sequence number of my stupid questions, which would definitely be in the thousands.
