I have a Showgard guillotine mount cutter that's getting a bit worn. Looking online, it appears to be a model Excal 602 but I don't see these listed as new anywhere. Does anyone know if they're still available? Thanks! - Troy

I think the Showguard 604 is the very best but unavailable. A 602 used is available on ebay British. Mystic sells a 601 and Subway a 605 which I believe are similar to your 602. |

You may want to consider this one. Great price at 19.99 cdn. Just add on a .01 stamp and it comes to $20.00 cdn and frree shipping. And for a 7" cutter. I have just purchased it and it works nice. |

Uni-Safe and Lindner make similar nowadays. You might consider getting the larger size (605 or equivalent) if you've run into the problem of the cutter just not being big enough on occasion. |

I tried 2 different cutters, guillotine types in the past and neither cut straight so I bought a Fiskars 9690 paper trimmer @ Target, about $10 @ the time. They carry the replaceable cutters in the stores too @ a reasonable price. Always an easy to do straight cut & I can snip off strips maybe 1/2mm thick when necessary. I highly recommend them. |

You should be aware that the plastic bar on the guillotine cutters is to be pressed down upon to keep the mount from moving as you cut. I don't think there are still any instructions saying you should do this. |

I concur with GrandpaJohn. I use a Fiskar paper trimmer to cut stamp mounts and it works great! |

I've been using my Showgard mount cutter for about 40 years. I had to put a drop of super glue on the hinge nut because it kept loosening.

In my experience the guillotine cutters are fine for mounts up to 40mm or so, but they won't give a straight cut on larger mounts for blocks or souvenir sheets. The fisker / carl rotary cutters are much better on larger size mounts. |

I've been using a Fiskars cutter for the last 5 years or so and have been very happy with it. |

I've used the same pair of scissors, plus a steady eye, for 40 years and still happy. |

Troy, in the interest of being thrifty, have you tried sharpening the blade on your cutter? If that'a the part that's getting "worn," it's an easy fix. A small sharpening stone can be used to stroke away any rough edges and return the blade to good cutting ability. Worth trying if you're so inclined. |

Go with the SHOWGARD 604, it's the best. I have been using one ever since they first came out and it has cut zillions of mounts with no problems. |
