I'm not good with shades, and I know that scans aren't very helpful either. But is there anything else about this stamp that might point to #10 rather than #11? Thanks

I'm pretty sure that Philadelphia CDS dates this to Sep 1851.
If I'm right, and I think I am, then that makes this a #10.

The blue Philly cancel on this stamp narrows the usage to '51, '52, and '53. However, a Type I used in any of those years guarantees that the stamp is a Scott #10, not that the color is indicative of a Scott #11A anyway. I do agree though that the usage is almost guaranteed to be 1851, which is when 99% of the orange brown stamps were used.

WYOstamp,
One way that can help is look at the detail of the engraving in the shirt, button and neck line of GW.
In the 10 it's a lot more crisp than 11's in most cases. Also in the rosettes, if they are not crystal clear, then it's a safe bet it's an 11.
As txtstamp and sinclair point out, the cancellation on this one also indicates it's use, which is before the 11 was printed.

Thanks much to txstamp, sinclair2010, and ClassicPhilatelist for illuminating commentary! The stamp owner, a friend of mine, will be delighted to hear this.
