I have to believe this is a color changeling or a really bad case of brown tide:

Is this a defect which is commonly seen?

It's called "Muddy Waters" - not a variety because it's caused by oxidation.
Mentioned in Unitrade: 2019, page 66.
I did a topic on it a while back - can't find it - where I showed the effect of peroxide!.

Muddy water variety. I found it. Thank you. I've only had my Unitrade catalog for a few days and am sorting thru my collection of stamps of Canada. Wasn't sure what to make of this one. US color changelings abound. Suspected it was the culprit in this particular stamp also.

May we all live to 101.

Your color changeling does improve the appearance of the stamp in my opinion. Have a US Stamp I believe looks better as a changeling:

This stamp seems to have been chemically altered. Don't know exactly which chemical.

In my limited experience I've noticed orange stamps seem to be the most common color changelings. One Canada stamp I came across recently is now brown:

I'm sure you've seen this one before....

Well, you now have an interesting item for your album. I like color variations, however they happen, because I can display them next to "real" colors just for my own interest.

You can find how peroxide works on these stamps by searching (top left corner) "Canada Imperial Penny Postage (Xmas Map)"
