I bought 5 precanceled postage due sheets last week. There were J69 (1/2c), J79 (1/2c), J80 (1c), J81b (2c), J85 (30c). The J79 and J80 have no gum. The rest have wet gum. Not sure of their value or how scarce they are.

They will fit in well with my postage due sheets that I bought at the post office in 1986 on the last day of sale. I purchased the 1c through the 50c sheets including the 11c, 13c, and 17c.

Looks good. I wish had the wayback machine to stop by the Philatelic Sales Division in DC back in 1985. Or better yet go back to TOPEX on June 19, 1959 when they issued the postage dues and see what I can find there. What are the plate numbers and positions on your J89 - J99 and J102 - J104 sheets? Here's a few more sheets.

Thanks for the plate numbers. On the J96 34283 please compare it with one on post https://goscf.com/t/52629 it see if you have the new color. Scroll down until you find the post with the three 8 cent plate blocks.

There are three types of dull gum: J91 37876 and 37877 always has dull gum and have type 1A and J104 35306 and 35307 always has dull gum and have type 1B. Dull gum type 1A tends to make the stamps curl and type 1B doesn't. The third type dull gum is type 2 which is yellow.

Please compare your J97 and J99 with the J91 and J104. If the gum a different color then its yellow. Here's a post that shows the difference:
https://goscf.com/t/62888. Just scroll down a bit and you'll find it.

Here are the images from the 4 dull gum sheets at the PB, back and front.

Here are two inking errors I found on the sheets. And a group showing 3 distinct colors out of that group.

Your J97 is the definitely a type II, but I can't tell if its gum type 1A or 1B. If you lay the sheet out flat and it curls then it's 1A. The J99 is type I gum type 1B.

I see lot of inking errors since these stamps were utility stamps and not for general public use. So quality control wasn't really strict.

I got lucky and picked up the J100 $1 MNH sheet for $25. I was always wishing that I had purchased the $1 sheet when I bought the others. I paid 25% of face value now. Good thing that I did not buy the sheet from the post office.

That's great! Can you post a scan? Is it a dull gum? Here's a post with a sheet of J100 I got a while back with a missing 'D' in position 90 among other things. https://goscf.com/t/62888

Here is a scan of the sheet.
It has wet gum. Position 90 is not missing "D".
Looks fairly well centered.

Shiny gum. Term "wet gum" came as counter to "dry gum" meaning invisible.

The more accepted term for the gum types is 'shinny, and 'dull'. Scott's use to delineate the dull gums by putting a small letter 'v' after the number i.e. J93v, but for some reason they stopped. Now that just have a listing as 'dull gum' with
the price for a single.

The dull gum variety was dry printed by the web-fed Cottrell rotary press on pregummed
paper rolls that were gummed before printing while the shiny gum variety was wet printed
by the web-fed Cottrell rotary press on ungummed paper rolls that were gummed after printing.
800 stamps were printed per rotation.

As to the missing 'D' in DOLLAR it only occurs on the lower left sheet position 90
on 34283/35282 plate pair. I haven't seen it on any others, but everyone please have
a look at your J100 lower left sheets.

Plate 35283 was first sent to press on 1974/07/10 and cancelled on 1978/03/30 after 251,889 impressions. Plate 35282 was first sent to press on 1977/09/10 and cancelled on 1987/11/12 after 112,444 impressions. I know the plate for 35283 was broken and retired. So it must have been broken sometime before 1977/09/10 (this was before dull gum paper was used). Then it was replaced by 35282. Plates 34283/35283 were paired when printed. After 35283 was retired 34283/35282 were paired and this lead to the new color on these postage dues. Please see https://goscf.com/t/52629.

Actually the $5 postage due has no varieties other than shinny and dull gum. There are no varieties in the denomination overprint. All positions on all plate numbers exist for both shinny and dull gum. The plate numbers used were on shinny gum were 26291, 26292, 26660, 26661, 27072, 27694, 27850, 27851, 29228, 29229, 34283, 35282, 35283, 35306, 35307, 37876, and, 37877 and on dull gum were 34283, 35282, 37876, and, 37877. The tough numbers are 26291, 26292, 27850, 27851, 35282, and 35283 on shinny gum and 34283 and 35282 on dull gum. The two different color types, carmine rose and carmine brown, exist on the $5 postage due as it does on the 2, 3, 5, 8, 10, 50 cent, and $1. Please see https://goscf.com/t/52629.
