I've just bought these two stamps. Looking at them, they look like typical old pen and ink drawings, which have been coloured in. Not at all like the usual stamps of the period, which were typically engraved.

I'm curious to know if there's a story behind this?

They were drawn by Frederick August von Kaulbach (1850-1920).Well know artist illustrator at the time. The prince regent knew him personaly. This serie is photo lithographed. That's why it looks like a small ink drawing watercolored, which is what it must of been originaly.

These were issued as "temporary" stamps with a very short period of time for use. They were issued on June 10, 1911 and valid only until June 30, 1911.

Stamps such as this were not allowed for international use under a provision of the Universal Postal Union.

Michel Deutschland-Spezial catalog says, "Michel numbers 92 and 93 were valid for postage only in Germany and Austria."

Thanks both. Very interesting info.

I think they're great-looking stamps, if somewhat out of the ordinary.

Hornet,
Is that a triangular REGISTRATION Label? or perhaps an AR Card notification?
If so, the first I have ever seen, or noticed.

Hi Rod, the triangular label is to indicate that it's a COD (cash on delivery) item.

Here's a similar triangular COD etiquette from Sweden inscribed in Swedish and French which Timm posted recently:
