Hi there,

I was reading an interesting article on Australian stamps with punctures on a website (www.ozrevenues.com/Articles/...elegraph.html) when I came across the following postal item:

May I know what exactly is a bulk postage docket and what was it used for? The article was meant to be on telegraphs but the item did not seem like one. And what caught my eye were (1) the high-denominations stamps (20 shillings in total!), and (b) the 6-sided punctures on the 5 shilling stamps).

Thanks!

What makes you think it should be telegraph?
The black punctures indicate the stamps were punched whilst affixed to the receipt, merely a re-use protection on high value stamps.

Guess:
If you look closely, you can note the town is BARMERA (South Australia) 11th November 1940
and there is written text "circulars" and "council"
Ergo, I would postulate that the council posted a circular around the town for some reason or other, and paid for the "bulk posting" in one hit.
That is the receipt.
Nice image, not seen that Australia Post article before.

Modern bulk postage, say around 1960-1970 often had a scribbled "20" or so on the top envelope, indicating envelopes posted attracted the discount 20 covers in same postcode/area price.
