I recently purchased this Antigua 1p Victoria, vermilion, perf. 12 1/2, watermarked Crown and "CC" (Scott 6), from an APS sales circuit. The watermark is inverted.

The 2015 Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue makes no mention of an inverted watermark variety for this stamp. What does SG say about this stamp, and what is its catalog value? My 2015 says $26.50 for the basic stamp.

As always, all responses will be greatly appreciated.

Robert

Hello Trainwreck. I have the SG 2010 edition which lists a Lake and a Scarlet version. I'm not that good with colors. The Lake version is listed as 13w, watermark inverted, and has no value listed. The Scarlet version is listed as 14w and lists a used value of 60.00 versus a non-inverted value of 21.00.

Question, though, is to make sure that it is inverted. The Lake is also known with inverted and reversed, though I don't see that listed for the Scarlet version ... just watermark reversed.

A better scan would help, but I know that is difficult with watermarks.

I will take a look at the watermark again to confirm orientation. As I recall, Stanley Gibbons references watermark orientation based upon viewing from the front of the stamp.

I don't know if I can improve the watermark image. I'll try scanning (in lieu of photographing) it while wet against a black background.

The 2013 Gibbons is slightly higher, but it appears that this stamp can come with reversed and inverted watermarks. Just for reference, the image below would be the normal Crown CC watermark as seen from the back. So based on the location on your scan, it does appear the watermark is inverted.

Thanks for posting the watermark options Richard. It is always confusing trying to interpret them based on catalog descriptions.
