When something has no catalogue value, people tend to formulate their own prices...

He wants offers, what's the big deal? The asking price is irrelevant, ebay forces you to put something in the use the best offer option.

When the listed price is US$17000, what will you offer?

Whatever you want. Why is it his job to tell you what it's worth to you?

Whenever I send a best offer and it is not accepted, I make a mental note to not bother with that seller again. No problem; doesn't hurt my feelings and there is plenty of material out there.

Not his job to tell me what it is worth, but it doesn't stop people from forming an opinion about his asking price. The "buy it now" price is a strong indicator on the type of seller the buyer is dealing with.

I completely disagree and so do thousands of sellers that use this extremely successful method every day. To collect offers for a few days you must put in a BIN that no one will pay.

Agreed.

One strategy is to sit there, and wait for my price; another strategy is to meet the other guy's price, which requires my invitation.

If I am not a Top Seller, with great placement in the listings and lots of traffic, offering the item in an ebay auction is an awful strategy.

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

Presumably scarce item.

Seller probably isn't sure what the true market value is.

Sets asking price high to avoid giving it away but is willing to consider offers.

Is there an issue here?

Don't like the price? Don't bid/buy/offer.

Simple. It's not rocket surgery.

Too many pricing police on the Interwebz.

Perf12 - thanks very much! Very interesting - seems we now have 40-50% of the entire population of these covers in one thread?!!

Seems to me that when folks don't know what something's worth, they tend to formulate an automatic negative bias?

An excellent example for all of us to learn from. There are truly valuable rarities out there that we've not seen!!

What's the big deal? As was pointed out, a similar one sold at public auction for $13,000 (likely plus 15% or so commission or about $15,000). Now one is being offered for $17,000. Offer what you think is fair, but I don't think the asking price is unreasonable given past sale history.

Not a big deal, just posted this for discussion. It seems that from the various auction links, similar postcards with triangular pyramid cancellation sent to Palestine went for only 3 figures. Perhaps the Suez cancellation on the stamp makes a big difference.
