I am looking for confirmation that this is a Revenue stamp for Great Britain. It is especially interesting in that the Red is deeply embossed.
Thanks for your valued imput.
Paul

Hi Wheelman,

Yes, this is a two shilling general revenue first issued around 1890.

The date on the red stamp is 22 January 1901.

The flower symbol and A towards the bottom corners identify the die.

Hi Nigelc: Thanks for the great info. Do you know the reason for such heavy embossing. It almost looks like if it was a little heavier it would have cut through the stamp and it actually did cut through the paper above the stamp.

It was actually common practice for the over-embossing die to be quite heavily embossed.

Over-embossing dies were used in many places in the British Empire. They are most commonly seen for the UK and Ireland, but they also exist for Hong Kong, India, Burma, the Straits Settlements (Singapore, Penang, Malacca), Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Kenya and Queensland in Australia (probably there are others as well, but these are the ones I can remember).
